Kaley Kingo @ The Black Clover
December 8 @ 9:00 pm - 11:30 pm
You don’t have to look far to find Kaley Kinjo in the Western Canadian music scene. The avid singer, songwriter and musician began his professional performing career by playing bass for acts in the seedy, smoke filled rooms of Calgary, Alberta bars. Having grown up watching his older brother play bass for a well established R&B group for many years, Kinjo was surrounded by influential musicians from the start. When he had dropped out of Theatre School and auditioned as a bassist for a well known gypsy-rock band by the name of The Plaid Tongued Devils, his life took a much different turn.
During his years with ‘The Devils’, Kinjo toured Canada and parts of Europe, billing with many reputable folk, roots, and world music groups. Aside from that experience, Kaley has also performed with dozens of different artists, both on stage and in the studio, in a multitude of different genres and a wide variety of settings; from 10 person capacity coffee shops to 20,000+ person crowds. From backing whimsical folk artists in intimate spaces, Top 40 dance and blues bands, to rocking crowds of thousands of bouncing hippies at backwoods festivals and festivities; Kaley has had the privilege of seeing music and performance from many different views, and has learned a thing or two along the way.
It wasn’t until Kinjo picked up the guitar and continued songwriting (having only ever written on piano and bass), that a different aspect of his talents were brought to light. As a singer and songwriter, Kaley has caught the attention of many and continues to turn heads with his versatility, ranging from acoustic roots and reggae, to folk feels, or even conventional pop forms.
His wonderful sense of purpose and storytelling in his lyrics marks him as notable even among his peers; having been a past finalist with multiple credits at the Calgary Folk Festival songwriting competition. After being awarded a Rawlco Radio grant prize, and releasing his debut full length album, ‘Run For Your Life’, Kinjo received generous spin on many radio stations across Alberta and Canada, including CJSW, CKUA, Rawlco Radio, and CBC, charting in several spots. Since then he has appeared in BeatRoute magazine, Avenue magazine, Avenue live, CJSW radio, CBC Radio’s Homestretch, City TV’s Breakfast Television, UP! 97.7FM and Junofest appearances. A live recording of his performance at The TransCanada Alberta Music Series has been broadcast by CBC repeatedly. As a solo artist, Kinjo has billed with a wide variety of artists, pleasing crowds where ever he goes from festival to teahouse. Kaley has just recently returned from his fourthexcursion to Japan, which saw him perform at many live venues, street festivals, TV and Radio stations, as well as recording studios. Kinjo is currently working on his next album and plans to release it in 2017.
Kaley has also released an EP album with his brother Jory, under the name Kinjo Brothers. He has routinely performed with Jory’s bands JK and The Relays, and The Mocking Shadows many times in the past on vocals, bass, keys, and guitar.
